Colostrum is the "first milk" that comes in, often before your baby has even arrived! It is a thick, sticky, yellow substance known as "liquid gold" and is filled with protective antibodies, micronutrients and good bacteria that support your little one's gut and immune system.

A technique used to collect colostrum during late pregnancy - also known as "harvesting".

Attempted from 36 weeks onwards, 3-5 mins on each side, several times a day, with approval from your Lead Maternity Carer (LMC).

Having colostrum on hand means your baby can feed as soon as required, especially if they cannot breastfeed or need extra nutrition.

Reasons for this could be:
- Baby has a low birth weight, is at risk of hypoglycaemia, or has a congenitcal condition eg, cleft lip, Down Syndrome etc.

- Mum has gestational diabetes, an elective c-section, anticipates being seperated from bubs at birth, or a low milk supply.

- Some mums may choose to antenatally express, so they have a supply of colostrum should they need it.

In some cases, antenatal hand-expression is not advisable. Women at risk of pre-term labour or other pregnancy complications should always speak to their Lead Maternity Carer first for advice.
NB: If you experience any abdominal pain, uterine contractions, vaginal blood loss or signs of hypoglycaemia STOP EXPRESSING and contact your Lead Maternity Carer.
